The station first signed on in 1942 as KFIX, becoming the first televison station and first independent station to sign on in Saskatoon. It was also first of the 2 stations to launch in the Saskatoon market through the 1940s (CJAR being second during the 1940s, as they signed on, later, in 1945). KFIX had no meaning for it's call letters. From 1942-1989 CFIX's studios and offices were located in 3510 8th Street East in Saskatoon (which would later become a mall 6 years later) as Primary and Secondary studio.

Prior to being owned by Tribune outright in 1990, CFIX operated separately from the company's other television and radio outlets through the News-owned license holder, CFIX, Incorporated - which in 1962, purchased Sasakatoon radio station, CPNX (110.5 FM, now CWFN), and soon changed said station's call letters to CFIX-FM (which became CQPC in 1989). Tribune eventually bought the station in 1990, fortunately, CFIX was retained, CQPC wasn't, and ended up being sold to Emmis Communications in 1998. CFIX initially featured programing that was essentially standard for most independent stations. During the late 1980s, CFIX fell into 4th place in the ratings among Saskatoon's then VHF stations.
