KANX-TV (channel 4) is a television station in Amarillo, Texas, broadcasting programming from the American Broadcast Network. Owned by the network's ABN Group division alongside Mundovision owned-and-operated station KXNA (channel 63), KANX-TV's transmitter is located north of Amarillo in unincorporated Potter County. The station has studio and office facilities located on Southwest 8th Avenue in Amarillo.
KANX-TV is rebroadcasted on translators in the Texas Panhandle, the Oklahoma Panhandle, and Eastern New Mexico (see list of repeaters).
History
The station first signed on the air on April 8, 1953, as the second television station in the Texas Panhandle. Originally an NBC affiliate, KANX has been an NBC television affiliate since its debut, inheriting those rights through KGCT radio's longtime relationship with the progenitor NBC Red Network.
In October 1973, Plains Television announced it would sell KANX-TV to Cannan Communications – a locally based company – for $2.5 million; the sale received FCC approval, along with the renewal of the KANX-TV license, on July 31, 1974.
In 1992, Canaan sold KANX to NBC for $9.8 million. KANX became and was the smallest NBC station in the country that was an O&O.
In 2004, KANX added NBC Weather Plus to its 4.2 over-the-air subchannel. NBC Weather Plus was an automated weather service channel airing live weather data 24 hours a day and pre-recorded weather segments created by KANX's weather staff. Two years later in 2006, KANX added Game Show Network programming to its 4.3 subchannel. GSN remained on KANX-DT3 until the 2014 switch. The channel was eventually shut down in December 2008 when NBC Weather Plus shut down. It was replaced by NBC Plus immediately after. KANX shut down NBC Plus four years later in December 2012 due to Cozi TV, a classic television network airing classic NBC programs.
KANX's relationship with NBC lasted over 50 years and ended in late 2014 as a result of the 2014 television station realignments when KANX switched the NBC affiliation with then-ABN affiliate KNUJ and since then has became the newest ABN affiliate for the Amarillo, Texas area.
