History

On December 30, 1947, KARL signed on the air as KZQ-TV named after former sister radio stations KZQ-AM 840, and KZQ-FM 98.1 (now KZQF). It was the first television station in Arlen, TX. It was a primary NBC affiliate with a secondary affiliate with ABC, CBS, DuMont, and RKO. Usually the Primetime slot was a mixture of RKO and NBC programming. Overnight programming was a mixture of NBC, CBS, and DuMont programming. Morning programming was a mixture of ABC, NBC, and CBS programming, while NBC had Daytime programming.  In 1952 The owner, KZQ Inc. was looking to invest on another channel in Arlen but due to FCC rules at the time KZQ Inc. had to sell the Channel 3 station to Storer Broadcasting. In January, 1953, KZQ-TV briefly changed it's call letters to KZQN which stood for KZQ NBC. but by February 1st, 1953. KZQN once again changed it's call letters to the current KARL. When (The current) KZQ-TV signed on on February 28, 1953, The ABC affiliate went to that station. Both stations however cherry picked CBS, RKO, and DuMont programming. In 1961, Storer Broadcasting sold channel 3 to the new Park Broadcasting, Inc. The station became a CBS affiliate as part of the 2015 fictional US TV broadcast realignment and refers to as "The Son of the Big Switch".
