KPRT, virtual channel 51, is a CW-affiliated television station located in Portland, Oregon, United States. It serves as the flagship station of Dorado Media.

KPRT maintains studio facilities on Southwest Naito Parkway (OR 99W) in Downtown Portland, and its transmitter is located in the Sylvan-Highlands section of Portland.

History[]

As an independent station[]

The station first signed on the air on October 2, 1981, under the ownership of locally-owned Downtown Broadcasting. At the time, it operated as an independent station and ran religious programs, older movies, cartoons and drama series during the day, along with select network programs that other stations declined to air. It also produced a two-hour local afternoon talk program. The station was branded simply as "Channel 51".

KPRT became a charter affiliate of The WB upon its launch on January 11, 1995, and changed its call letters to KOWB to reflect its new affiliation on October 2. By the fall of that year, bartered syndicated programming (including cartoons, and some older sitcoms and dramas) were added to the station's schedule. After becoming a WB affiliate, KOWB significantly upgraded its on-air look and schedule. It acquired several first-run syndicated sitcoms and talk shows.

Switch to The CW[]

Following Time Warner and CBS Corporation's January 24, 2006 announcement of The WB and UPN's shutdown and the launch of the jointly owned CW Television Network, it was announced that on May 2, 2006. KOWB, which returned its previous KPRT call letters, would become The CW's Portland affiliate upon the network's September 18 launch. Meanwhile, former UPN affiliate KMYO affiliated with MyNetworkTV two weeks before on September 5.

KPRT continued to identify as "Channel 51" during the summer months, officially switching to the new "Portland's CW 51" branding on September 18, though the station's logo bug was changed the week before to the "CW51" logo while promoting the network's pending launch.

On April 7, 2018, KPRT's branding was changed to "Portland's CW."
