History[]

KSMD signed on the air for the first time on May 8, 1963 as a public television station under the NET affiliation, it was owned by Arizona Western College. In 1970, NET folded into PBS and the station immediately became an affiliate of this new network. After 45 years of ownership and affiliation, Arizona Western College decided to sell the station to CBS Corporation and turn it into a CBS owned-and-operated station to match the other CBS-owned stations in Arizona. The sale was completed on January 1, 2015. On April 23, 2016, CBS Corporation then announced they would be selling the station to Cunningham Broadcasting, a partner of Sinclair Broadcast Group to form a duopoly with QTV affiliate KCJT. The sale was finalized on July 17, 2016.
