Storm coverage

May 3, 1999 - the deadliest storm hits the city of Moore. KXOK went live and stayed on storm coverage until 11:30 PM which overlapped the 5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts due to the storm. It was the site of which the Norman office of the National Weather Service began officially adapting the TORNADO EMERGENCY message.

May 2003 - a similar storm hits South Oklahoma City, but not as deadly as the 1999 storm. The station went 9 full hours into storm coverage.

May 20 and May 31, 2013 - two of Oklahoma's nastiest storms claimed over 20 victims in those two events, including a storm chaser. The 20th was known as the "Moore tornado", which took nearly the same path as the 1999 storm. The 31st was known as the "El Reno tornado", the one that claimed the storm chaser, and tossed over a storm chasing car operated by The Weather Channel. The men in the Weather Channel car were okay, though one did sustain chest injuries, none life threatening, mainly due to the hard landing after it rolled as the storm blasted by. Both storms combined for a total of 23 operation hours for KXOK.
