WAQZ is a television station in Panama City, Florida, affiliated with MyNetworkTV. WAQZ is owned by Journal Media Group alongside CBS affiliate WEFS. WAQZ was launched in the year 2012 when Littlefield Communication sold the construction permit for the station to Journal Media Group. Journal Media Group had the station affiliated with MyNetworkTV when the station launched Sept. 24, 2012.
History[]
On April 20, 2012, then owner Littlefield Communication announced it was selling the construction permit for the station (which initially held the call sign W18DR-D) to Journal Media Group. Under the transfer, Littlefield would receive $4,000 and would turn over the permit to DTV America Corporation LLC which would, in turn, transfer the permit to Journal Media Group. Journal Media Group exercised a purchase option that was part of the deal to acquire the station outright on May 11, 2012. Journal Media Group changed the calls to WAQZ on June 4, 2012.
On July 17, 2012, Journal Media Group signed an affiliation agreement with MyNetworkTV for WAQZ. As a result, WAQZ became the MyNetworkTV affiliate for the Panama City area when the station took to the air on September 24, 2012. On July 17, 2016, WAQZ picked up affiliation for MyTV, and moved MyNetworkTV programming to the late-night hours. However, on Jan. 4, 2017, Young Broadcasting purchased then-WTSI and converted it into a MyTV affiliate and changed the call letters to WIYD, and WAQZ became a full time MyNetworkTV affiliate once again.
