History[]
WCIL was launched on Nov. 4, 1969 by Metromedia. WCIL quickly became the home of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team and the Chicago White Sox baseball team. In addition, WCIL aired cartoons in the morning and late afternoon, off-network syndication in the afternoon, and movies throughout the night. WCIL and WGNX began battling for the top independent station in the market. In 1986, Rupert Murdoch bought Metromedia, which would be the nucleus for his network, FOX Broadcasting. And when FOX was launched in 1986, WCIL became a FOX O&O affiliate. In 1988 WCIL changed their call letters to WFXC. Chicago White Sox broadcast went to WLUK-TV in 1990, where Chicago Blackhawks broadcast went to WGNX in 1994. Ratings for WFXC got a huge boost when FOX was awarded the NFC package from the NFL in 1994.
