WJJW (virtual channel 35/digital UHF channel 17) is an independent television station in Detroit, Michigan. It is licensed to the suburb of Wyandotte and is owned by Graham Media Group, and also serves as that company's flagship station, though Graham is no longer based in Metro Detroit.
An alternate feed of WJJW is programmed for cable subscribers throughout the Midwestern United States and Ontario, Canada.
History
Early history
The station first signed on the air on September 1, 1950. The station was originally owned by the Wyandotte News-Herald, along with WJJW-FM radio (103.1).
Over the years, the News-Herald acquired several other broadcasting outlets, such as WOOM in Mixopolis and built and signed on KNWH (now KPNS) in Hillwood, Washington. Eventually, the News-Herald created National Media as a holding company for its broadcasting interests, with WJJW-TV as the flagship station.
In 1969, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began to impose restrictions on the common ownership of print and broadcast media in the same market. The combination of the News-Herald and WJJW-TV was given grandfathered protection from the new regulations. But by the mid-to-late 1970s, the News-Herald was under pressure to break up its Detroit cluster voluntarily. Fearing that an FCC-forced divestiture was imminent, the News-Herald shuttered National Media and sold WJJW-TV and KNWH to the Washington Post Company. On July 22, 1978, the "-TV" suffix was removed.
In 1982, WJJW moved out of its facility in the former News-Herald headquarters on First Street near Elm Street in downtown Wyandotte and moved to its current broadcast facility at 13th Street and Pennsylvania Road in south Wyandotte. The building has also housed the headquarters of Graham Media Group since 1997.
