WNYP is a UPN owned-and-operated station located in New York City. WNYP is owned by the Paramount Stations Group subsidiary of Paramount Global and Dorado Media.
History[]
WNYP signed on the air on May 28, 1950 as an Independent station. It remained an Independent until 1993, when it became a PTEN affiliate.
In 2001, the station premiered its first 10pm Newscast as "Channel 34 News". For many years the name didn't change until 2006 when the station was bought by Viacom and the Paramount Stations Group.
WNYP began broadcasting Nets Basketball and White Sox Baseball in 2003, while many other stations were competing for sports rights, the station was in control of sport specials in the area.
Acquisition by the Paramount Stations Group[]
In 2006, CBS and Warner Bros. created a new network called The CW. Although Viacom (now Paramount Global) wasn't excited about the idea, they worked on the Paramount Stations Group. Viacom bought the full rights for UPN and began looking for stations to purchase.
WNYP became a UPN owned-and-operated station in the New York City area in 2006.
