WPXJ is an UPN affiliate serving Miami, FL and it's surrounding areas around South Beach. Broadcasting on channel 21, WPXJ is owned and operated by Alltel Communications. WPXJ is part of a duopoly in Miami (Alltel also owns and operates WBZL). This station was granted a construction permit to operate on UHF channel 59 on November 12, 1986, under the callsign W59BC. A license to cover was issued on July 29, 1988. The station applied to move to UHF channel 21 and became W21BM in 1992. Although the FCC regarded the station as having immediately changed callsigns, the move was not licensed until 1996.

W21BM was silent by December 1997, when Paxson Communications purchased the station from original owner Miami Translator, Inc. It returned to the air in April 1998 as WPXJ-LP, temporarily carrying programming from Paxson's infomercial network, the Infomail TV Network (inTV) until the launch of Pax TV on August 31. The station had a construction permit to flash-cut a digital signal into operation on UHF channel 21, which was never constructed. On Sept. 9, 2013, Ion Media Group announced that they've sold WPXJ-LP to Flinn Broadcasting, who in turn, turned WPXJ-LP to an UPN affiliate. And in January, 2015, WPXJ-LP launched their prime-time newscast. On Apr. 10, 2017, Flinn Broadcasting, along with 4 other companies, merged to form Alltel Communications. Later on, WPXJ went from low power to a full-power station.
